On Android, the default setting on Google Play is to Auto-Update over Wifi. And this Setting can be changed according to your requirements or needs.
There may be many situations or reasons where you want to turn off Automatic Updates for your Android Smartphone. Like the next update breaks support or you want to take full control over the apps that are being updated & the apps that aren’t.
Note: I tried this on my Nexus 6p which is currently running Android Oreo 8.0.0.
How To Disable Automatic App Updates On Android
Turning-Off Updates of Specific One App:
The following steps will help you in turning or disabling a specific app from automatically getting updated:
- Go to the Google Play Store.
- And then click on the top-left hamburger icon and choose My apps & games.
- Swipe up to find the app or game that you want to disable updating automatically.
- Click on the app and then click on the top-right Three dot icon.
- Unselect the Auto-update.
That’s all you have to do if you want to disable auto-update for a specific app. After doing this all the other apps will get updated and if you want to update the disabled app, you would have to go to Play Store & manually update the app.
Disable Automatic Updates for All Apps:
The following steps will help you to turn off or disable all the apps or games from automatically getting updated:
- Go to the Google Play Store.
- And Click on the top-left hamburger icon and then Click on Settings.
- In the General Settings, you will find “Auto-update apps” option.
- Click on it, and then click on “Do not auto-update apps” option to disable auto-updating of the apps.
- If you want to update apps on your Mobile Data than you can click on the “Auto-update apps at any time” option. But you must note that extra charges may apply if your data plan runs out.
That’s all you have to do if you want to disable Auto-Update for all the apps or games on your android smartphone.
No app will be installed or updated on its own unless you explicitly go to the Play Store and update it.
